After a full day of catching the new Warburton shuttles, there was no better way to close out the Stage 2 opening than a sunset lap down Mad Max. As the “Golden Hour” light hit the Yarra Valley, we dropped into one of the most anticipated new trails in the network to see how it rides when the pressure is off and the views are at their peak.
Speed, Style, and Progression
Mad Max is a trail that invites speed, but it also demands respect. It’s packed with jumps and rollers that require a good understanding of the park’s natural “speed tuck.” On only my third run down this particular track, the timing wasn’t always perfect—casing a few jumps is a rite of passage on opening day—but the sheer flow of the trail makes it an instant favourite for intermediate riders looking to level up.
The Stage 2 Aesthetic
Riding in the Yarra Valley at sunset is a world-class experience. The way the light filters through the tall timber on the Mad Max ridge adds a cinematic layer to the ride. While Stage 1 focused on getting the network established, Stage 2 trails like Mad Max feel like they were designed with the landscape in mind, offering massive views alongside massive berms.
Riding Tips for Mad Max
-
Master the Speed: The jumps on Mad Max are designed to be cleared at trail speed, but if you’re still learning the gaps, they are very “case-friendly.” Don’t be afraid to find your feet before sending it deep.
-
Vision is Key: During Golden Hour, the light can be dappled and tricky. A clear lens or high-contrast goggles can help you spot those landings in the shadows.
-
The Last Lap: Always remember the “last lap” rule—stay loose and enjoy the flow rather than hunting for a personal best when the light starts to fade.
