Mt Tumbarumba MTB Park

High-Country Granite & Gravity

Nestled in the western foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Mt Tumbarumba MTB Park is one of regional New South Wales’ most unique and rewarding mountain bike destinations. Carved into a towering granite hill overlooking the historic township of Tumbarumba, this 27-kilometre gravity-focused network delivers a riding experience unlike anywhere else in the state.

What makes Mt Tumbarumba truly special is its origin story. Built on private land secured by the passionate local community through a famous community livestock auction—where local farmers literally donated cattle to buy the mountain—the park is built by riders, for riders. The terrain blends expertly sculpted machine-built flow and massive jump lines with raw, hand-cut technical singletrack that weaves through natural granite boulder fields, rock slabs, and dense high-country bushland.

Whether you are chasing airtime on Send It Express, carving endless berms on Tumba Rumble, or tackling the raw, technical rock gardens of Boulder Dash, Mt Tumbarumba offers a complete “degustation menu” of mountain biking. With vehicle shuttles running from the base, a dedicated climb trail, and top-to-bottom runs that drop straight back towards town, it is a destination that punches far above its weight.

Mt Tumbarumba’s signature experience brings a unique high-country flavour to regional gravity riding. For those seeking effortless momentum and endless berms, high-elevation runs like Cowabunga and Andersonic feed seamlessly into Tumba Rumble—the park’s premier flow artery that carries high-speed rhythm through open granite timberland.

If you are looking to get wheels off the ground, Send It Express serves as the benchmark jump line, loaded with perfectly sculpted table-tops and progressive rollers. For riders who prefer raw terrain, physical handling, and hand-cut character, trails like Boulder Dash, Holy Cow, and Moomentum provide an engaging contrast, weaving through natural granite boulder fields, rock slabs, and technical rock gardens.

E-bikers and self-shuttlers are equally well covered with engaging climb trails like Up and At ‘Em, which make the elevation gain fun rather than a chore. Lower down the hill, transitional connectors such as Log Roll and Granite Flow keep your speed up right to the base, while adjacent cross-country loops at Mason’s Hill offer an ideal alternative for a casual pedal.

However, riders should stay sharp; the raw, hand-cut tech trails and exposed granite features can be unforgiving if you miss your line. Whether you are hunting airtime on the jump lines, picking your way through natural rock puzzles, or linking a massive top-to-bottom run from the summit, the distinct mix of machine flow and raw hand-built dirt ensures every lap at Mt Tumbarumba stays engaging.

Getting There

Mt Tumbarumba is situated in the western foothills of the Snowy Mountains in regional New South Wales. While it is a longer trip than standard day-trip destinations, it serves as an incredible weekend or multi-day mountain bike getaway.

  • From Melbourne: The drive is roughly 460 km north-east via the Hume Freeway (M31), taking around 5 hours—a distance and travel time very similar to a trip up to Falls Creek. Take the exit towards Wagga Wagga/Tumut at Holbrook or cut across via Jingellic along the Murray River for a scenic high-country approach.
  • From Sydney: Approximately 480 km south-west via the Hume Highway (M31) and Tumut, taking roughly 5 hours to 5 hours 30 minutes.
  • From Canberra: A convenient 220 km trip taking just over 2 hours and 30 minutes via the Monaro Highway and Snowy Mountains Highway, making Tumba an easy weekend option for ACT riders.

Pro Tip: If you are travelling up from Melbourne or down from Sydney, Tumbarumba makes a perfect anchor point for a broader high-country road trip. You can easily pair a few days of shuttles here with rides at nearby networks like Mt Pangee (Henty), Wagga Wagga, or the alpine trails at Thredbo and Snowy Valleys.

Parking & Access

Mt Tumbarumba offers straightforward, convenient access whether you are meeting the shuttle or rolling straight into a pedal lap:

  • Main Trailhead & Shuttle Hub: Located on Taradale Road, just a short 2-minute drive from the centre of town. This is the primary parking zone, offering direct access to the shuttle pickup area, lower trail finishes, and the start of the Up and At ‘Em climb trail.
  • Township Parking: Additional parking is available throughout the Tumbarumba township near local cafes, bakeries, and parks. Because the mountain sits directly above the town, you can easily park in town, grab a coffee, and take a warm-up spin straight onto the trail network.

Pro Tip: On busy shuttle weekends, the main trailhead parking on Taradale Road can fill up quickly. Arrive a little ahead of your scheduled shuttle slot to secure a park and get your gear sorted before loading up.

Shuttles & Access

Uplift services are a key feature of the Mt Tumbarumba experience, allowing riders to maximise their descending time across the network’s 250m+ vertical drop.

  • Service Operator & Routes: Shuttles are run by local outfitters Ride Tumba. The primary pickup point is located at the main trailhead hub on Taradale Road, dropping riders off at the central mid-station junction to access the main gravity lines.
  • Booking & Minimum Numbers: Pre-booking online via Ride Tumba is essential to guarantee your seat. Note that shuttles require a minimum of 5 riders booked to operate, so locking in your spot early helps ensure the service runs for the day.
  • Service Availability: Uplifts typically operate on weekends, public holidays, and select peak periods. On quieter weekdays, private group shuttle bookings or local driver availability can sometimes be arranged directly through Ride Tumba.
  • E-Bike Alternative: If shuttles aren’t running or you prefer pedalling, the network features dedicated climb trails like Up and At ‘Em, making self-shuttling via e-MTB fast and engaging.
Post-Ride Recovery

Mt Tumbarumba isn’t just about the trails; the local community has completely embraced the mountain bike culture. Sitting just minutes from the trailhead, the historic township offers plenty of options to kick back and refuel after a day of gravity laps:

  • Cafes & Bakeries: Head into the main street to grab a quality coffee and a classic country pie or pastry before heading back up the hill or making the drive home.
  • Breweries & Distilleries: Tumbarumba is home to fantastic local craft venues, including local breweries and boutique distilleries—the ultimate spot to unwind and talk through the day’s line choices over a cold drink.
  • Pubs & Local Dining: For a proper post-ride feast, the local pubs serve up generous meals, warm high-country hospitality, and a welcoming vibe for dusty riders.
