Every now and then, you drop into a trail blind and it instantly cements itself as an all-time favourite. At Mt Tumbarumba MTB Park, that trail is undoubtedly Johansen’s Corkscrew. This brilliantly constructed Black Diamond line is an absolute masterclass in technical trail building and will easily live in your mind rent-free long after you have packed the bikes away.

The trail announces its intentions straight out of the gate with a skinny, technical double log ride to filter your entry speed. From there, it rapidly descends into what can only be described as rocky tech heaven. The builders have made incredible use of the natural granite on the mountain, weaving a descent that is relentless, engaging, and spectacularly raw.

As you navigate the pitch, you are met with beautifully constructed armoured berms that hold your speed through the tightest corners, immediately followed by intimidating rock rolls and blind drops. Because the trail requires such intense focus and precision, a blind run here is an absolute adrenaline rush. You have to trust your bike handling, keep your eyes up, and commit to the steep chutes as they appear.

An enduro bike with dialed suspension and sticky rubber is highly recommended for surviving the square edges and steep rock slabs. Our only regret with Johansen’s Corkscrew? Not having enough time in the day to ride it again and again.
