My second @RockyTrailMedia #superflow was a double header at Falls Creek Alpine Resort. I waited until the last minute to register for the event as the weather wasn’t looking great at the start of the week. By Wednesday I’d decided I was going to give it a crack regardless and by a stroke of luck the forecast changed for the better. In fact, race weekend ended up perfect compared to reports of non-stop rain in Melbourne and a scorching 40°C down the mountain in Mt Beauty.
My strategy was to attack skyline while my legs were still fresh. With a distance of over 4km and a 360m descent it was always going to be a marathon effort. Trails were in mint condition, too. I’m glad I decided to concentrate on Skyline in the morning. After my third run the trail was starting to deteriorate in the lower section.
Heavy metal proved difficult for me. Three runs and the best time I could do was my first sighting run, with crashes on both subsequent runs. I only started the GoPro part of the way down my first run and completely forgot on the second. Good thing I captured my crash on the third… hopefully that’ll make it worth watching.
I also crashed on my first run on Thunderbolt thanks to a couple of riders coming up behind me and then one cutting the corner in front. It was enough for me to lose concentration for a split moment and hit the embankment. A brutal trail at the best of times.
