Al Capone’s Garden: A True Blue Test of Skill and Flow
The Mogo Mountain Bike Trail network offers a variety of experiences, but few trails deliver the sheer variety and fun of Al Capone’s Garden. Rated blue, this trail is a prime example of expert trail building, blending challenging single track technical sections with incredibly rewarding, high-speed flow. For riders moving up from the green trails, this is a must-do to practise skills in a relatively safe, yet stimulating environment. We found it to be one of our favourite blue options on the whole network. Our journey onto Al Capone’s Garden had an additional purpose.
Having been tipped off by Angus from Ride Mogo, who generously supplied our Merida eONE-EIGHTY ebikes for this series, we were tasked with checking on the neighbouring Skyrabbit trail. The two trails run parallel for a significant distance, and we needed to see if the ongoing trail maintenance was still affecting access or the quality of the ride. We were happy to report back on the status of the connection, but not before we fully immersed ourselves in the technical elements of the Garden itself.
The technical sections here are characterised by natural features, including rock gardens that require precise line choice. This is where the e-bike truly shines; having the assistance to power out of slow-speed technical sections allows you to maintain momentum and focus on the trail, rather than exhausting yourself with heavy pedalling.
The Merida ebikes we were using made short climbs feel negligible, ensuring we could hit every berm with maximum energy. The design of the trail means that moments of challenging, head-up concentration are quickly rewarded with perfectly sculpted flow sections where you can let off the brakes and lean the bike over, utilising every kilometre of the trail’s design.
This balance is key to why Al Capone’s Garden is such a popular choice amongst the Mogo regulars. Whether you are looking to hone your technical skills or just enjoy a satisfying blue-rated ride, this trail delivers in spades.
A massive thank you again to Ride Mogo for the sponsorship and fantastic ebikes!
